Foundation to Help
Fund Library Programs in Face of Huge Budget Cuts
In
light of impending budget reductions, the Brevard Library Foundation
has decided to concentrate its fund-raising effort in support of key
community library programs.
Specifically, the foundation is gearing up to fund the purchase of books
for children, setting up a continuing gas fund to keep the Mobile Library
on the road and putting money aside to fund the annual countywide Family
Reading Festival.
In light of the severe budgetary cuts, the foundation has put an ambitious
plan to fund a Digital Inspiration Center for the library system on
hold (See story on Future Projects page).
“Clearly, our library system is one of the local agencies facing severe
cutbacks in funding,” said Foundation Executive Director Ned Kellar.
“The projected cuts are more than $4 million, a 20 percent reduction
in current funding. This will result in a drastic cut in book purchasing,
cuts in programs and reduction of staff,” he noted.
Kellar said the foundation is working to reduce the effects of impending
budgetary cuts on three key programs that it has been supporting over
the years. Specifically, the foundation is committed to raising $3,500
to provide fuel for the Mobile Library (a gift by the foundation to
the library system in 2007), $30,000 to fund the annual Family Reading
Festival and $40,000 to add 2,000 children’s books to the county libraries.
(More information on these programs is available on the Current Projects
web pages).
“The three programs are vital to our county library system and its continuing
well being,” said Kellar, who asked that anyone who can help with a
donation contact him. “We are asking for more than a gift,” he said,
“We are asking you to invest in projects that will make this a better
community.”

The
Brevard Library Foundation
The
Brevard Library Foundation was founded in 1999 to seek private sector support for our Library System.
With tax caps, diminishing
state and federal funds, and the increasing
costs of materials and supplies, cutbacks are inevitable if new sources
of funding are not developed.
The
Foundation was formed to ensure that our Public Libraries can not only
continue to meet the present needs of our community, but grow to accept
the new challenges that we will face in the coming years.
Donations to the Library Foundation are tax-deductible as provided in
Section 170 of the Internal Revenue Code.
Goals
of our Foundation include:
-
Improving the library's collection of books
(especially for children)
-
Helping our libraries to become "state
of the art" so that its services can be enjoyed by all
-
Providing additional library services as needed by the
community
Towards these goals we solicit donations for immediate needs as
well as endowments that will assure the future health of our library
system.
This
website will acquaint you with our current projects, the
different ways that you can help, and the tax benefits that your
generosity can produce. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have
any questions.
